MEC & Michigan LCV to host drinking water town hall in Kalamazoo on Jan. 25

On Thursday, January 25, Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) and Michigan League of Conservation Voters (Michigan LCV) will hold a drinking water town hall in Kalamazoo. The event is designed to provide residents an opportunity to learn about their drinking water, including where it comes from, how it is treated and transported on the way to their taps, and what contaminants are potentially present.

WHEN: Thursday, January 25, 2018, 5:30 - 7:00 pm

WHERE: Kalamazoo Valley Community College (downtown campus). Anna Whitten Hall, 202 North Rose Street, Kalamazoo, MI  49007

At the event, MEC will share a draft of its new resident drinking water toolkit with attendees and seek feedback to ensure the finished version of its toolkit answers the questions on residents' minds in a user-friendly format. Michigan LCV will also have opportunities for residents to weigh in with lawmakers and share their concerns.

“Our hope is to take the lessons learned from the Flint water crisis and turn them into positive action,” said MEC President Chris Kolb. “Our goal is to design a toolkit that will help people find the information they need to make good choices for their families and become effective advocates for safe, affordable drinking water in their communities.”

The groups will also answer questions about Michigan’s proposed revisions to the Lead & Copper Rule. If passed, the rule would be the most protective in the nation and make Michigan’s drinking water program a national model for excellence.

Previous drinking water town hall events have been held in Bay City, Jackson, Lathrup Village and Plainfield Township. Additional town halls will be announced on MEC’s Facebook page as locations and times are set: facebook.com/MichiganEnvironmentalCouncil/
